Listen carefully: Opportunity is knocking. And it’s carrying a $5,000 check, along with the title “The Best Shooter on the Planet.” Both of these could be yours before this summer is out. It’s time for Pop Photo’s Third Annual Photographer of the Year Shoot-Out, your chance to earn fame and fortune, and to show the world just how good you really are.

In years past, there were several rounds of competition leading to a weeklong three-photographer Shoot-Out on the streets of New York. But this year’s event is quite different. The Shoot-Out will be conducted on PopPhoto.com with everything from the assignments to the entries handled online.

That means no more airport check-in, no more thrill rides in New York taxis, and, unfortunately, no more pastrami at the Carnegie Deli. But it also means no more elimination rounds. So every photographer who is up to the challenge can participate every step along the way — no more three-person face-off.

Here’s how it works:

• Every entrant must post four photographs — a portrait, landscape, product, and action shot — at http://shootout2007.popphoto.com/ by 9 a.m., ET, July 6. Get those four shots in, and you’re eligible to take part in the July 16-19 Shoot-Out.
• On Monday, July 16, an assignment will be posted in the morning. You will have until the next morning to post your shots from that assignment.
• Tuesday morning, July 17, a new assignment will be detailed on the Shoot-Out website.
• Wednesday morning, July 18, another assignment.
• Each assignment will be posted at 9 a.m., ET, and each must be completed and posted on our website by 8 a.m., ET, the next morning.

Photos of any size may be submitted online, but the winning entrant must be able to provide 300 dpi files.
